A comment on The FDA, part 2

Please forgive me, I meant no offense. I am sorry I came off as judgmental. This subject is very frustrating for me sometimes because I feel very strongly that people in pain need to be helped and when the choice is between pain and death/cancer/insert other nasty side effect, that's not helpful at all! There should be better choices out there. The only thing I've ever had to live with is sciatica. Painful? Yes. Permanent? Not for me. Do you take pain medication and does it help? I am really interested in knowing. Is it effective ENOUGH to be worth the risks involved? Any perspective you have on this subject is greatly appreciated.

A comment on The FDA, part 2

I live with fibromyalgia. I think that the regulations surrounding the drug market need to be significantly tightened. And I think your point would be well made without passing down judgment on folks with disability and chronic illness for their choices in how to treat their conditions. And despite your noncomittal noises, that is what you are doing. (Do you take someone seriously when they preface a statement by saying "No offense, but" or "Not to be racist, but"...?) It's easy: simply omit the empty speculation and offer your opinion on the subject itself. "It's awful that the FDA lets through so many drugs that obviously carry such hefty risk to the patients who take them. They are being too lax with patients' very lives." That was easy. -- I don't mean to come across too harshly, but people with disabilities face enough casual judgment about their lives and their choices. I know that is not what you meant to do. Unfortunately, that is how privilege works. Thank you, though, for an otherwise sound article.
