Portable Air Compressors Recalled Due to Fire and Electrical Hazards

Advance Stores Co., in conjunction with the CPSC, is recalling about 64,000 Strike Force Portable Air Compressors due to fire and electrical hazards.

The compressor's motor can overheat and ignite the protective cover, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Also, the cover might not prevent internal components from being touched, which poses an electrical shock hazard. The firm has received four reports of fires. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled air compressor is a 4.6 gallon, 3.5 HP Strike Force and includes the following model and serial numbers:
BMM2524 (25254) JWAPC4005xxxxxxxxx
AC251FT (2516) YFJAC4005xxxxxxxxxx
APC4005 (4005) CSCC4005xxxxxxxxxxx
The portable air compressor has black twin air tanks and all the model and serial numbers can be found on the compressor's housing.

The recalled product was available only at Advanced Auto Parts stores across the United States and at www.partsamerica.com from October 2006 to December 2007.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Sailing (U.S.) International Corp., in conjunction with the CPSC, is recalling about 8,000 Flashing Pacifiers or 2-in-1 Flashing Pacifiers with Whistle Necklaces because the nipple can detach from the base, which can pose a choking hazard for children.

The recalled pacifier necklace has a 28-inch multicolored cord with a 3- inch plastic pacifier that comes in assorted colors.
Pileup in Fresno Kills 2 and Injures Many

On Saturday, November 3, there was a huge pileup of over 100 vehicles near Fresno, California that ended up killing two people and injuring many more. A dense fog was blamed for the pileup.

A 6-year-old and a 28-year-old who were traveling in separate cars were killed in chain-reaction collisions around 7:45 a.m. Several people trapped in vehicles had to be extracted and more than three dozen people had to be airlifted to local hospitals. At least nine big rigs were involved in the pileup on northbound, but no hazardous materials were spilled.

Highway 99 was completely shut down after the accident but the southbound lane was eventually re-opened. The northbound lane remains closed so investigators can find the cause of the accidents.

According to Mike Bowman, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, "There was probably two-foot visibility in the fog when I got here. It was really bad. It looked like chaos. Cars were backed up on top of each other."

Thick seasonal fog known as "Tule fog" typically occurs in Central California in the late fall and winter. A stretch of the highway several miles south was the scene of an autumn 74-car pileup nearly a decade ago that left two people dead.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

FDA Examines Lipsticks for Lead

The FDA is investigating claims that certain lipsticks contain lead. Officials from the agency stated that similar claims in the past have not been confirmed.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics said that a third of the 33 red lipsticks examined by an independent lab contained a level of lead exceeding 0.1 parts per million -- which is the FDA's limit for lead in candy. The FDA does not set a limit for lead in lipstick.

The group's report, called "A Poison Kiss: The Problem of Lead in Lipstick" found that the following brands contained lead: L'Oreal's Colour Riche "True Red" and "Classic Wine", Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor "Maximum Red", Christian Dior Addict "Positive Red", and Maybelline's Moisture Extreme "Cocoa Plum" and "Midnight Red".

The organization's goal of the study is to pressure companies to take the toxic chemicals out of consumer products and replace them with safe alternatives. The claims are generally not supported by the FDA's analysis, but the agency is going to look into the specific details for this case.

According to the trade association, it has been recognized that there are small amounts of lead in some lipsticks, but the lead generally is not known about and is unintentionally added.

"Consumers are exposed daily to lead when they eat, drink water and breathe the air. The average amount of lead a woman would be exposed to when using cosmetics is 1,000 times less than the amount she would get from eating, breathing, and drinking water that meets Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards," said John Bailey, an executive vice president at the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

All of these undeclared chemicals pose a threat to consumers because they may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

Consumers who have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease of have high cholesterol may take nitrates for their condition.
Bodee LLC, Inc. is Recalling Zencore Tabs Due to Undeclared Ingredients

Bodee LLC, Inc., in conjunction with the FDA, announced they are recalling the dietary supplement Zencore Tabs because of undeclared ingredients.

Representatives of the FDA found these undeclared ingredients during lab analysis and stated that the ingredients are potentially harmful to consumers.

FDA asserts that its chemical analysis revealed that one lot of Zencore Tabs contains aminotadalafil, an analog of tadalafil, the active ingredient of a FDA-approved drug used for Erectile Dysfunction (ED). FDA maintains Aminotadalafil is close in structure to tadalafil and is expected to possess a similar pharmacological and adverse event profile. Further, FDA declares another lot of Zencore Tabs contains sildenafil, the active ingredient of another FDA-approved drug used for ED, as well as sulfosildenafil and sulfohomosildenafil, both are analogs of sildenafil. All of these undeclared chemicals pose a threat to consumers because they may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

Some consumers with conditions such as diabetes, who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease many need to take nitrates. Erectile Dysfunction is a common problem for men with these ailments, and some consumers may seek these kinds of products to better their sexual performance.

Zencore Tabs were sold in health food stores and through mail order across the U.S. and Canada. The product comes in a 2-capsule blister pack which is packaged in a booklet with five booklets in one box.

Bodee and the FDA are recommending that any consumer who is using Zencore Tabs should cease use immediately and should seek medical care if they are experiencing any problems. The company is working with the FDA to make sure their product will be safe in the future.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Drugs, Medical Devices, and Implants.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Progressive Insurance Spies on Church Group

An unbelievable story to some, but just old hat to attorney's who deal with Progressive Insurance and their outrageous behavior almost every day.

Today, it was reported that detectives hired by Progressive Insurance became members of the Southside Christian Fellowship Church in Atlanta in August 2005 in order to get damaging information on two church members involved in a traffic accident.

The detectives talked their way into private support groups where members discussed topics such as abortions, sexual orientation and drug addiction.

In several cases I am aware of in Northern California, Progressive has used detectives in a very aggressive way to shadow people involved in accident claims.

Today, the CEO of Progressive Insurance issued an apology for such behavior stating it was not within company guidelines a day after this story made the front page of Atlanta Newspapers.

Wonder when he'll issue an apology for all the other detective work Progressive rather routinely seems to do in accident cases?

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to our section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ed Smith

Is your stock exposed to the subprime woes?

Many investors have been affected by the increasingly perilous subprime mortgage situation and several stocks such as Countrywide, Bear Sterns and Washington Mutual have been directly affected. While exposure to the risks in subprime mortgage companies is in the nature of the game and has been well known for the better part of 2 years, many investor's are unaware that their other stocks, seemingly uninvolved in subprime investments can also be impacted.

Today, many mining stocks such as Silver Standard (SSRI), Cameco Corp. (TSX:CCO) and Miramar (AMEX: MNG) announced that severl million dollars of notes that they held from Financial lenders were not being timely paid.

Silver Standard announced today that A $14 million note issued by a Coventree-sponsored conduit matured today and remains outstanding.

The meltdown at Coventree began July 19th and the news of how those problems are impacting other stocks is a developing story. Stay tuned..but check the background of notes owed to any companies you own with a fine tooth comb.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ed Smith

Great Music to Prepare for Trial

II've spent way too much time in the left side of my brain the past few months and now I'm going to share some web sites I found recently that'll open up your creative side. Finetune is a new website that allows you to add superbad soundtracks to an onscreen player and you can string 45 songs in a playlist. You can add up to 3 songs of each of your favorite bands, share playlists with others and find other music lovers who share your taste.

Another fun music program I discovered is called Evill Lyrics which contains 15,000,000 lyrics from your favorite songs. You can even play the lyrics while the music plays.. youe own office Karaoke player.

Preparing for trial can be hard work, but music adds magic to the grind.

Have fun.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ed Smith
